What are Trigger Points?

Trigger points are tight, hyperirritable knots in muscles that can cause pain, stiffness, and referred discomfort in other areas of the body. They often develop due to muscle overuse, stress, poor posture, or injury and can lead to restricted movement, muscle weakness, and persistent tension.

Trigger points are commonly found in areas like the neck, shoulders, back, and legs, contributing to conditions such as headaches, sciatica, and chronic pain syndromes. Trigger points can also develop in rotator cuff injuries, lower back pain, hip pain and surgical presentations.

Trigger point therapy, including manual pressure, dry needling, and massage techniques, helps release these knots, improve circulation, and restore normal muscle function.

Our physiotherapists in Auckland & Wellington specialise in trigger point therapy to help relieve pain and improve mobility.
